# Every discipline keeps a library.

This is ours — the corpus the School has written, and the lineage it builds on.

## The founding texts, read in full, in their own words.

[Founding Letter · Read in full](https://www.thewealthschool.ch/founding-letter.html) A Founding Letter.

On the formation of stewardship as a practice — and why it cannot be assumed. The thesis, at length: the gap between managing wealth and holding it, the three intelligences the work integrates, and the question that does not resolve itself.

Read the letter

Manifesto The Manifesto.

On worth beyond the scoreboard — why measurement cannot tell you what a life is worth, and how a society changes what it measures. The School’s declaration.

In progress

[Theory · Working paper v1.0](https://www.thewealthschool.ch/ExPT_Working-Paper_v1.0.pdf) Existential Portfolio Theory.

Wealth as 9 Life Capitals, in motion, held by one finite life — the open statement of the theory: three axioms, the 9 Life Capitals, four state variables, 9 propositions, the derivation of stewardship, and what would count against it.

The Library · What We Read

### The Long Discovery of Human Wealth

No discipline begins alone.

Wealth Stewardship stands on older sciences, wisdom traditions and unfinished questions. This Library keeps those intellectual debts in the open.

It is organised around the questions humanity had to ask before the wealth of a human life could become a discipline.

Before the Library

### The First Questions

Long before philosophy, economics or psychology became disciplines, humanity explored the meaning and stewardship of life through sacred text, oral tradition, story, ritual and contemplative practice.

Across the world’s religious, spiritual and Indigenous wisdom traditions arose the first enduring questions:

- What makes a life worth living?

- What is enough?

- What should be cherished?

- What do we owe one another?

- What belongs to us?

- What merely passes through our hands?

The Library begins with published thought. The questions begin much earlier.

I · The Human Question

### What makes a human life flourish?

Foundation
Aristotle · Nicomachean Ethics

Wealth is useful for the sake of something beyond itself: the activity of living well. The philosophical beginning of wealth as instrument rather than final measure.

In Conversation

Henry David Thoreau · Walden

A life deliberately lived against the excesses of possession, convention and distraction.

Viktor Frankl · Man’s Search for Meaning

Human worth and meaning can survive the loss of everything countable.

Martha Nussbaum · Creating Capabilities

A modern account of flourishing grounded in what human beings are genuinely able to do and become.

Hartmut Rosa · Resonance

A life that answers back, in contrast to one defined only by acceleration, control and optimisation.

The Discovery

A flourishing life cannot be reduced to what it possesses.

II · The Value Question

### What is value—and who gets to decide?

Foundations
Karl Polanyi · The Great Transformation

What happens when market logic escapes its social container and reorganises society in its own image.

Pierre Bourdieu · The Forms of Capital

The academic articulation of capital in the plural: economic, cultural, social and symbolic.

In Conversation

David Graeber · Toward an Anthropological Theory of Value

Value as the significance societies assign to human action, meaning and possibility.

Michael Sandel · What Money Can’t Buy

The moral limits of markets—and what is corrupted when everything acquires a price.

The Discovery

Value is never neutral. It is socially created, institutionally reinforced and morally consequential.

III · The Wealth Question

### What is wealth when it is not reduced to money?

Foundations
Marcel Mauss · The Gift

Wealth as relationship, obligation, reciprocity and social continuity.

Theodoros Rakopoulos & Knut Rio, eds. · Towards an Anthropology of Wealth

A comparative inquiry into wealth as substance, imagination, vitality, power and relational capacity.

In Conversation

David Graeber · Toward an Anthropological Theory of Value

A bridge between value, human action and the creation of meaningful social worlds.

Jane Guyer · Selected Works

Wealth in people, relationships and socially recognised capacities.

Annette Weiner · Inalienable Possessions

Wealth found not only in what circulates, but in what must remain attached to persons, families and communities.

Chris Gregory · Gifts and Commodities

The distinction between exchange that creates relationships and exchange that separates objects from persons.

The Discovery

Wealth is relational, cultural, embodied and social before it is financial.

IV · The Capability Question

### What enables a human life to become what it can become?

Foundation
Amartya Sen · Commodities and Capabilities · Development as Freedom

A life cannot be assessed by income or resources alone, but by the real freedoms and capabilities available to the person living it.

In Conversation

Martha Nussbaum · Creating Capabilities

A philosophical account of the conditions required for human dignity and flourishing.

Robert Kegan · In Over Our Heads

The demands of modern life often exceed the developmental capacities with which people meet them.

The Discovery

Resources matter only through the lives they make possible.

V · The Systems Question

### How do living systems sustain, learn and change?

Foundations
Ludwig von Bertalanffy · General System Theory

The foundational claim that wholes cannot be understood through isolated parts alone.

Donella Meadows · Thinking in Systems

A practical language for feedback, leverage, delay, resilience and systemic behaviour.

In Conversation

Peter Senge · The Fifth Discipline

Systems thinking joined to learning, mental models, shared vision and collective capability.

Fritjof Capra · The Web of Life

Living systems as networks of relationship that regenerate—or unravel—together.

Edgar Morin · On Complexity · La Méthode

Complex thought as the capacity to hold interdependence, contradiction and uncertainty without reduction.

The Discovery

Wealth does not reside in isolated assets. It lives in relationships, feedback, adaptation and time.

VI · The Formation Question

### How does a human being become capable of stewardship?

Foundations
Murray Bowen & Michael Kerr · Family Evaluation

How a person remains themselves within the emotional field of a family system.

Robert Kegan · In Over Our Heads

Human development as the transformation of how meaning is made, not merely the accumulation of knowledge.

In Conversation

George Kohlrieser · Hostage at the Table

Secure base, attachment and dialogue as conditions for risk, conflict and leadership.

Edwin Friedman · A Failure of Nerve

The importance of self-differentiated leadership within anxious systems.

Peter Senge · The Fifth Discipline

The formation of individuals and institutions capable of learning together.

The Discovery

The quality of stewardship cannot exceed the developmental capacity of the steward.

VII · The Commons Question

### How do we steward what no one can fully own?

Foundation
Elinor Ostrom · Governing the Commons

Evidence that shared resources can be governed through durable institutions beyond the binary of private ownership and state control.

In Conversation

Karl Polanyi · The Great Transformation

Markets remain embedded within social and institutional life.

Michael Sandel · What Money Can’t Buy

Some goods are diminished when governed by market logic alone.

The Discovery

What is shared can be responsibly held without being reduced to property.

VIII · The Time Question

### What changes when a life unfolds only once, along one irreversible path?

Foundation
Ole Peters · Work on Ergodicity Economics

The distinction between averages across many imagined possibilities and the lived reality of one path through time.

In Conversation

Herbert Simon · Selected Works on Bounded Rationality

Decision-making under uncertainty, incomplete information and limited cognitive capacity.

The Discovery

A human life is not an average across possible lives. It is one path, lived in one order, with irreversible consequences.

IX · The Family Wealth Question

### How is wealth stewarded across generations?

Nearest Practitioner
James E. Hughes Jr. · Family Wealth

The practitioner who brought human, intellectual and social capital into the language and practice of family wealth stewardship.

James E. Hughes Jr., Susan Massenzio & Keith Whitaker · Complete Family Wealth

The mature articulation of family wealth as the integrated stewardship of human, intellectual, social, spiritual and financial capital.

The Discovery

Financial capital is only one part of family wealth—and exists to serve the life of the family across generations.

X · The Missing Discipline

### What if the wealth of a human life were a discipline in its own right?

- Philosophy asked what makes a life good.

- Anthropology asked what wealth is.

- Sociology revealed its many forms.

- Economics asked how value is allocated.

- Development theory asked what people are able to become.

- Systems science revealed interdependence.

- Psychology explored human formation.

- Family wealth practice brought non-financial capital into intergenerational stewardship.

Each answered part of the question. None established a discipline devoted to stewarding the full wealth of one finite human life.

The Wealth School begins where these conversations meet.
